Based in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada, Wild Shepherd is a hiking guide service whose mission is to provide awe-inspiring wilderness experiences in Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest. Wild Shepherd was started by husband, father of two, adventurer, musician, photographer and wilderness guide Gabriel Mann. Gabriel was initially inspired to establish the guide service during a six month solo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. During this time, Gabriel recognized the transformative power of the wilderness to heal and to provide peace and clarity. Now, just as much as ever, we need wild places to help us find perspective and balance in our lives.
Before and after hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Gabriel worked as a staff photographer for the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park. From 2008-2012, Gabriel introduced individuals and groups to some of his favorite locations in the park as well as the intricacies of how to use their cameras to capture these pristine places. Between 2012 and the present, Gabriel has worked for the Yosemite Mountaineering School, Yosemite Conservancy and Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides. Working over the past 10 years as a mountain guide he has gained knowledge, confidence, and experience guiding individuals and groups on single and multi-day excursions.
Since Gabriel ventured westward from his home state of Michigan, he has climbed many mountains, including the ‘Big Wall’ of marriage and having two children. In 2013, he guided his new wife up El Capitan for part of their honeymoon, reaching the summit after five days on vertical granite. In 2016, he worked nights as a site manager at an overnight outdoor school and spent the days caring for their first child so his wife could go to nursing school. He now juggles two young children and runs Wild Shepherd while his wife works as a Registered Nurse.
Gabriel and his team of local guides (a wildlife biologist, a geologist, a naturalist, a birder, a photographer, and a climber) are excited to share their passion for Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest with individuals and groups that are seeking a purposeful and meaningful adventure. The people who know best
“We seriously can not say enough good things about our hike with Wild Shepherd. Our guide Bob made our visit to Yosemite unique and memorable. He took us away from the crowds so we could experience the beauty and quietness of Yosemite. He also provided us with the adventure our family of four needed. He kept our kids excited and intrigued. We would definitely recommend this group to anyone looking for a Yosemite adventure.”
“Our family has been vacationing at Pinecrest Lake for years and we were looking for an adventure. We are so grateful to have booked with Wild Shepherd. We never would have made our way to the beautiful places we were led to. It was also a unique experience to have a wildlife biologist as a guide.”
“Luis was awesome. He knew just the right spot to take my wife and I to celebrate our 25th anniversary. I would highly recommend Wild Shepherd for an off the beaten path experience.”
